SPA TOUR IN BULGARIA



There are more than 700 mineral springs in Bulgaria. All of them are different in temperature, content of minerals and in their curative quality. The ancient Thracians knew very well this curative quality of the different springs,  that is why they built their first settlements and temples close to them. The Romans, who conquered the Balkan peninsula in the first half of the Ist century constructed thermae in these towns. They used the water not only to be cured from different diseases, but to keep the body in a good and healthy condition.

 

Tour highlights:

  • Velingrad -  known as the SPA capital of the Balkans. It ranks the first place in number of springs with water temperature between 28 and 91 degrees C. The water of Velingrad is good  for the locomotory system, for certain neurological diseases, kidney problems and gastric diseases.
  • Hisarya - 40 kilometers from the second biggest city in Bulgaria - Plovdiv, Hisarya is one of the oldest and the most popular Spa centers in Bulgaria. Most of the springs are   curative for kidney- and gall troubles and gastric diseases.
  • Sandanski- there are 80 springs in the area with water temperature of 42-81 degrees C. The town is close to one of the most picturesque towns of Bulgaria - Melnik situated on the southern slopes of the Pirin mountain. It is the place of birth of the leader of the first slave uprising in Rome - Spartacus. The water is good for the peripheral nervous system, bronchitis and rheumatism.
  • Rila  monastery - the treasury of the Bulgarian culture
  • Golden sands und St.st. Constantine und Helena - a combination of sea climate and mineral curative springs, treatment of  arthritis, arthrosis, stress, pharyngitisect..
  •  Pomorie - deposits of curative mud rich on magnesium, chlor, natrium, calcium und sulfates.

Itinerary:
Day1. Arrival in Sofia - airport and transfer to the hotel.

Day 2. Sofia - Rila monastery – Sandanski
After breakfast You head to the biggest monastery in Bulgaria - the Rila monastery. . The monastery was founded by the hermit St. Ivan Rilski in the 10th century. Ivan Rilski is one of the greatest Bulgarian saints.  The Monastery is recognized as an achievement in architecture, iconography and wood carving of the Bulgarian Revival. Lunch in a restaurant near the monastery. In the early   afternoon You arrive in Sandanski.  Accommodation and Spa-treatment in the balneo center of the Sandanski   hotel****.
Dinner at a nice restaurant in the town .

Day 3. Sandanski

SPA treatment at the hotel after breakfast. You go to a private  house for lunch . The owner breeds trout. You can catch your own trout for lunch. After that you will be taken to the southern border of Bulgaria to the smallest, but  the most picturesque town - Melnik. It is famous for its local wine . Wine tasting in one of the houses will be a great experience for your senses. Dinner at the restaurant of the hotel.

Day 4.  Sandanski – Velingrad
Drive via the picturesque  area of Jundola and Predela to Velingrad. During the tripyou will admire the beauty of the highest mountains of Bulgaria - Rodopi, Rila and Pirin. Lunch in Sandanski. Accommodation, lunch  and Spa-treatment in the balneo center of hotel *****. Dinner at the hotel.

Day 5.
Velingrad
Breakfast and excursion to the vicinity of Velingrad - the spring of Kleptuza - Picnic in the open. Spa-treatment in the balneo center of the hotel.  Dinner and overnight at the hotel.

Day 6. Velingrad - Bachkovo - Plovdiv
BreakfastYou continue to Pazardjik to see one of the masterpieces of the Debar art-school for wood carving -  the altar of the Virgin Mary church  and after that in the morning You head to Northern Rodopi mountains, where the georgian brothers Bakuriani founded their monastery in the 11th century . In the main church  you will see one of the miraculous icons of  Virgin Mary - Eleousa. After lunch in the  "Waterfall” restaurant  close to the monastery  - a sightseeing tour of Plovdiv. Plovdiv is one of the oldest cities in Europe. It existed as a settlement about 8 000 years ago. It has been a big trading center in the Middle Ages. In the historic quarter of the city  you will visit beautifully decorated houses, ancient fortress walls, the Roman forum and stadium, magnificent churches. The sightseeing tour includes  a visit to the Roman theatre, Hindlian`s house and St.st. Constantine and Helena Church. Spare time in the pedestrian area. Dinner in a folk-style - restaurant andfolklore program.

Day 7.  Plovdiv – Hissarja
Drive to another Spa resort - Hisarya.Spa-treatment in the balneo center of the hotel. ( 9.00 - 13.00)After lunch in the hotel sightseeing walking tour of Hissarya and the historical museum. Folklore program in the museum.
Dinner and overnight at the hotel.

Day 8.   Hissarja

After breakfast Spa-treatment in the balneo center of the hotel. ( 9.00 - 13.00)  In the late afternoon you leave to Starosel . Lunch in a cosy ethnographic complex.  We get acquainted with the wine production in the area and taste the best wines of the region. Dinner in Starosel.

Day 9. Hissarja - Rose valley – Pomorie
After breakfast  drive  to the Valley of the roses in the very heart of Bulgaria -  center of the rose oil production.  You'll have the opportunity to admire the old frescoes (5th century) in the Thracian tomb  and taste the different products made of rose oil.  Lunch in “Magnolia” restaurant. Drive to another Spa resort – Pomorie where the biggist deposits of curative mud are to be found.

Day 10. Pomorie  and the vicinity

After breakfast Spa-treatment in the balneo center of the hotel. ( 9.00 - 13.00)Lunch in the hotel. After Lunch a visit to the only active monastery on the Black sea coast and a Thracian tomb heroon (shrine) in the area.Dinner and wine tasting in the winery of Pomorie.

Day 11. Pomorie -  Nessebar - Varna

After breakfast Spa-treatment in the balneo center of the hotel  till 11.00 Drive to Nessebar. Situated on a small peninsula connected to the main land only by a narrow isthmus , Nessebar  is one of the most important ancient seaside colonies of the Greeks who inhabited it in the VI century BC. In the later centuries Romans, Byzantines and Bulgarians have left their marks as well. Therefore, the town is now a real open-air museum. The remains of fortress walls and basilicas and the typical architecture of the Bulgarian Revival on a very small territory make the town the most interesting  and most visited site in Bulgaria. Fish-lunch in Nessebar and drive 90 km in Golden Sands or in the resort St.st Constantine and Helena or Golden sands  Hotel*****

Day 12. Varna
After breakfast Spa-treatment in the balneo center of the hotel. ( 9.00 - 13.00). Sightseeing tour of the town of Varna, starting with lunch in a fish- restaurant close to the harbour. The archeological exposition, showing the development of the ancient town of Odessos ( the former name of the town of Varna) is housed in the imposing  building of the former girls' high school It displays the oldest gold treasure in the world dating back  5000 years B.C.  Visit of the Roman baths, built during the reign of Emperor Antonius Pius and the biggest cathedral "Assumption of Virgin Mary" in the center of the city.Dinner and overnight in the hotel.

Day 13. Varna - V.Tarnovo - Sofia

This day is full of exquisite sites visits: The village of Arbanasi  with its  four monasteries and a lot of churches in the area  and the fortress of the Bulgarian tsars of the Second Bulgarian Empire - V.Tarnovo. Lunch in Arbanasi in a more than 300 years old house - reconstructed in a nice restaurant. Drive to Sofia

Day 14. Sofia
Sightseeing tour of the city. and spare time in the center. Traditional evening with a folklore show - fire dancers - Nestinary. This is an unique tradition of Bulgaria - the Nestinary dance barefoot over embers to drive away  the evil from the fields.
